The Cutting Room Floor

The Cutting Room Floor

Executive produced and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips) with several tracks produced by Tommy (Ramone) Erdelyi, The Cutting Room Floor took Jed Davis roughly seven years to finish and another four to release. It’s an offbeat album of hardscrabble wisdom and an attitude that always figures the other shoe is sure to drop. “Before I Was Born” quotes the keyboard line from Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me” on an out-of-key piano before crashing into its own budget-line, bargain-basement rock ‘n’ roll. “Denny’s 3am” is the sound of experience from a guy who’s been all over New York State, from Long Island to Albany. “I Have A Rose” sounds like an Off-Broadway theater piece. “Queens Is Where You Go When You’re Dead” is a lo-fi acoustic ramble that’s a bit mean to the often-disparaged borough. “Blood” adds some extra funk. “Interesting Times” throws together tough, snapping drums with a melody that chases its tail around in circles. Davis is a poet laureate of the forgotten streets.
