Dream Cave

Dream Cave

Australia’s Crowd Control relocated to London to further its international reach after its debut album, 2011’s Bliss Release, became a critical five. Dream Cave continues the band's trip through rainy-day pop atmospherics, best exemplified on “There’s Nothing in the Water We Can’t Fight” on its debut and “Moon rabbit” and “Ice Age Heat wave” on this follow-up. Elements of The Clientele and the quieter ends of MGMT can be heard in the mix, along with any number of cool indie-Aussie bands from the past (Go-Betweens!). Cloud Control keeps its sound intimate and manageable, so while synth patterns add to the web of sound on “Scar,” they take a backseat to the various vocalists, who tackle lead and harmony lines with equal ease. Though Cloud Control is often considered a psych-pop band, there’s just as much Belle & Sebastian in its gait. “Happy Birthday” pulses with a spirited indie rock groove, where bass lines are as essential to the fun as the jocular vocal play.
