Shinki Chen

Six-string dignitary Shinki Chen broke from the power trio Speed, Glue & Shinki to record this eponymously titled solo album in 1971. “The Dark Sea Dream” opens with backmasked noise and living-room ambience—piano notes trickle over cats meowing and streetcars clanging in the distance. Then guitar feedback seeps in before a tripped-out cacophony ushers in “Requiem of Confusion.” Over buzzing guitar distortion and grinding Hammond organ, Chen croons soulfully through a warbling, rotating Leslie speaker for that underwater sound also used in Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan.” His twisting guitar leads take center stage as they bend, moan, and scream over Blue Cheer–sounding bass distortion. “Freedom of a Mad Paper Lantern” kicks big blues-rock riffs piped through a crackling fuzz pedal. The spooky “Corpse” closes with some of the best psychedelic haunted-house music ever made. Fans of heavy, vintage, Japanese psych like Flower Travellin’ Band, Blues Creation, or even Chen’s own Speed, Glue & Shinki are sure to find familiar warmth in these recordings.
