During rockabilly's golden age—from the middle to late '50s—Charlie Feathers recorded classic songs for several labels. But due to Sun Studios' looming stature in rock history, the songs he recorded with Sam Phillips get the most attention. Feathers’ relationship with Sun predates the arrival of Elvis Presley, and he later claimed that Presley stole his arrangement for “Blue Moon of Kentucky.” The truth is, the things that kept Feathers from reaching Presley's level of superstardom are what make Feathers extraordinary. He had an awkward face and an odd voice, and he played country music with so much swing and vulnerability that the songs were always threatening to roll right off the rails. His hardest, tightest rock songs ended up on the labels King and Meteor. Sun, on the other hand, brought out the best of his country persona, including “Peepin’ Eyes,” “I’ve Been Deceived,” and the immortal “Defrost Your Heart.” Many of these songs let us see Feathers up close; he was the most eccentric and humanistic performer of the first rockabilly generation.
