Yellow Tag Mondays

Yellow Tag Mondays

The Farewell Drifters' mix of clear-toned harmonies, rippling acoustic instrumental work, and pop-influenced songwriting makes Yellow Tag Mondays a refreshing, unpredictable affair. Zach Bevill’s yearning lead vocals — influenced as much by ‘60s pop/rock as traditional country — sets the tone for the group. The Drifters’ luminous cover of the Beatles’ “For No One” makes clear their genre-busting intentions. Their original tunes delve into hometown nostalgia (“Sunnyside Drive”) and romantic melancholy (“Please Dream of Me Tonight”) while maintaining an undercurrent of optimism. Unbridled romps like “Virginia Bell” explain why the band is welcome on the bluegrass festival circuit. On “Fight to Find Your Way,” Bevill and his cohorts manage to fuse Celtic and blues motifs without straining. If there’s a keynote track on this album, it may be the closer “Somewhere Down the Road,” a jaunty celebration of the touring life. Clayton Britt’s fast-fingered guitar work and Christian Sedelmyer’s dancing fiddle lines deserve special kudos.
