Father Time

With 2008's Father Time, soul searching Americana balladeer Hal Ketchum uncorks a bottle of fun, donning a myriad of musical hats making for an unpredictable and welcoming listening experience. "Millionaire's Wife" bounces on a twangy and soulful strut with backing female vocals to inadvertently approximate what it might sound like if Delaney & Bonnie never broke up. Gears shift on "Million Dollar Baby" with a rose-in-teeth hint of flamenco and subtle nods to classic gypsy guitar. "Continental Farewell" starts slow and romantic with a vintage silver screen cowboy feel reminiscent of a Gene Autry tune before snapping into an upbeat, knee-slapping, western swing number that would make Bob Wills proud, especially since Ketchum turns a break-up theme into a festive and funny song. He then gives Tom Waits' "Jersey Girl" a rootsy roadhouse waltz, garnished with rich pedal steel notes and subtle vocal accompaniment as well as Ketchum's uplifting and inspired singing. Impressively, Ketchum retains his earthy tone amid this saunter through varying genres.
