Four brothers from Mississippi, the Chambers Brothers got their start singing with the church, before moving to Los Angeles where they played mostly gospel and folk music in the late ‘50s. By the mid-‘60s, their style had evolved and been fully electrified, and they were fast making a name for themselves playing a unique style of soul music, earning legions of fans with their high-octane sound and live performances. They recorded 15 albums between '66 and '76 and scored several hit singles, most notably "Time Has Come Today" from 1968. This half-live, half-studio album was originally released that same year, though was recorded at sessions several years earlier. It includes some exceptional covers of early rock ‘n’ roll favorites like Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode" and the Isley Brothers' party standard "Shout," while also highlighting their own material such as the mellower "Seventeen" and "It Rained the Day You Left." Fully remastered 40-some years after its initial release, this remains a classic album by a truly one-of-a-kind group.
