The Gospel Collection

The Gospel Collection

"With 2008's The Gospel Collection, the Oak Ridge Boys unveil newer recordings of old secular classics, like a heartier version of ""Jesus Is Coming Soon"" and a more modern take on that old time religion in the waltzing ""I Know."" The quartet's signature bass singer Richard Sterban steps up on their slightly swampy rendition of the traditional ""This Little Light of Mine,"" carrying the song during the harmonies and sounding a bit like Lurch from the Adams Family on his solos. The flowing, feel-good single ""Did I Make a Difference"" showcases how each member's voice has aged amazingly well. Listening to those heavenly harmonies on ""Amazing Grace"" should remind you why the Oak Ridge Boys hit hard on the radio charts in 1981 with ""Elvira."" Yes, that ""oom-pah-pah-mow-mow"" part was a catchy hook that sounded like an early Beach Boys 45 slowed down to 33rpm, but what was even more unique then is what remains peerless 27 years later — the band's amazingly textured voices coming together to birth one huge empowering and joyous sound."
