Major Magic

Major Magic

The coastal Oregon town of Astoria—the setting for the ‘80s cult-classic film The Goonies—is also the current home of Holiday Friends, a group formed in the college town of Moscow, Idaho. And the group confound whatever expectations one might have for a band largely bred from bucolic surroundings and big-sky promises. Two years in the making (and rerecorded at least “one and a half times,” says leader Scott Fagerland), Major Magic was initially recorded live and lacked the studio precision that gives the final version much of its appeal. There’s a dance club accessibility heard throughout their catchy synth-pop, which appears primed for Passion Pit comparisons. Songs like “All Last Autumn,” “Spirit Girl,” and “Kayfabe” offer up shameless vocal and instrumental hooks. They’re a spunky quintet led by singer/guitarist Scott Fagerland and singer/keyboardist Jesse Wityczak, who write most of the material. Scott’s brother Jon Fagerland also provides guitars, keys, and vocals, while bassist Zack O’Connor and drummer Joey Ficken lock down the rhythm section.
