Act a Fool

Act a Fool

A legendary figure on the Los Angeles Hip-Hop scene, King Tee began honing his skills as an MC years before relative youngsters like Eazy E and Ice Cube even contemplated picking up the mic. King Tee’s spare, hard-hitting debut Act A Fool is perhaps the definitive statement of the Pre-Chronic Los Angeles Gangsta aesthetic. Though more outrageous crews like N.W.A and Compton’s Most Wanted were more successful in capturing the public’s imagination, King Tee drew a portrait of Compton life with a consummate eye for detail that his younger peers lacked. The beats here are the soul of simplicity, a James Brown loop here, an 808 beat there, but they provide the ideal backdrop for King Tee’s brilliantly conceived odes to custom cars, good music and high living. King Tee’s importance to the development of Los Angeles Hip-Hop cannot be overstated, and it’s a joy to see this essential release back in print.
