Polish trumpeter and composer Tomasz Stanko has been a major figure on the European jazz scene for decades. He’s released numerous albums as a leader, and on 2010’s Dark Eyes he’s backed by a fine band consisting of two Danes, guitarist Jakob Bro and bassist Anders Christensen, and two Finns, pianist Alexi Tuomarila and drummer Olavi Louhivuori. The album opens with “So Nice,” the sort of slow, atmospheric cut strongly associated with ECM, and the production — like all the releases on that label — is excellent. “The Dark Eyes of Martha Hirsch,” displays real fire. After a lengthy, moody opening, the group launches into an uptempo, swinging passage that features Stanko’s blistering solo, a statement that evokes the heat of Miles Davis. Dark Eyes includes two Komeda compositions, the meditative “Dirge for Europe” and the wistful “Etiuda Baletowa No. 3.” Stanko and the band shine on those tracks and throughout this excellent recording.
