Bring 'em all in

"Left Over Alls" is part "Odds & Sods" collection, part career retrospective and, frankly, all wonderful. Although maybe never intended to be considered a "real" Terri Hendrix album — at least not in the sense of an official follow-up to 2007's "The Spiritual Kind" — this grab bag of previously unreleased studio recordings, revamped favorites and new covers is every bit as enjoyable as anything else in her catalog. It's also not a bad place to start for newcomers, not so much because it's her best album (for me that's still a tie between "The Spiritual Kind" and 2002's "The Ring"), but because the diversity on display here really gives a good overview of what sets her apart from so many of her peers on the Americana/contemporary folk scene. In a word, that's "spark": Even on her "regular" albums, you'll rarely if ever hear two songs alike, and never anything musically dull or lacking in heart, wit and soul. My favorite songs here are Terri's own "Be Willing" and her terrific cover of Waterboy Mike Scott's "Bring ’Em All In," with two other covers, John Hadley's "Blue Eyed Cowboy" and Bob Livingston's "Wilderness Song," coming in close behind. But the new versions of "Wallet" and "Hole in My Pocket" are also essential; both songs have been staples of Terri's live sets even before she first recorded them way back on her 1998 sophomore album, "Wilory Farm," but these new versions put the originals to shame. Usually when an artist re-records a "greatest hit" for a compilation album, it's a matter of the artist not owning the masters to the originals. But since Terri's released all of her music on her own label since day one, that's not the case here at all; those songs needed to be revisited because the 1998 versions no longer did them, or Terri, justice. Great songs — and artists — grow and evolve over time. "Left Over Alls" is testament to how far this Texas original has come in the last decade and change, and best of all, serves as a tantalizing teaser of where she'll go next.

Left Over Alls

Progression and maturity in attitude, craft and being human. Terri's new album weaves together balance and moving harmonics. Sense of humor about life that all can appreciate.
