Produced in part by Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla, Lesser Oceans often demonstrates signs of being influenced by Death Cab and The Postal Service in its more reflective moments. Fences leader Christopher Mansfield clearly picked Walla to help him occupy that territory, yet two of the album’s best-known tracks—“Arrows,” with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and “Sunburns”—deviate from that general timbre and style. This is partly the result of inviting Lewis and Jacquire King (Of Monsters and Men) to apply their production talents, and partly because Mansfield is just that kind of adventurous songwriter. Fences’ second album is meant to expand their range
