iTunes Review

When a band is playing for the same-sized crowd that comes out to see a football game, they really have to bring it, and Three Days Grace’s third album does just that, reassuring fans and newcomers that the alt-metal quartet was born for the big stage. Similarly to 2006’s One-X, 2009's Life Starts Now is heavily inspired by singer Adam Gontier’s inner demons. “Bitter Taste” fires up the album with raw and meaty guitar riffs that hammer down like ‘70s hard rock before the song shape-shifts into a post-grunge rail against the sour remnants left behind by a toxic, back-stabbing, anti-muse. The behemoth sized “Break” follows with similarly themed lyrics that poignantly express what it feels like to be at your wit’s end. But like the album’s title and sleeve art suggest, some positive insight rises from the ashes of all this burning catharsis — especially on the anthemic chorus which punches new life into that age-old “rise above” adage. The melodic “No More” brings the light at the end of the tunnel out into the open with some soaring harmonies, Edge-inspired guitar chimes, and honestly hopeful lyrics.

Different, but in the best way possible.

I am not only writing this review because I love three days grace (Which I do), but instead to try to give an honest review.

Most people who love three days grace will find this album a little different, but you will adjust. Some will love it, some will hate it, you will just have to listen to find out.

This is my personal preference and opinions on the songs.
Bitter Taste- Kind of the basic three days grace you know, not a bad song, but not my favorite. 8/10
Break- One of my favorite on this album, this song kicks a*s with the chorus and the sounds they use. Excellent and Creative 10/10
World So Cold- Kind of reminds me of Bitter Taste, just a little different sound. 8.5/10
Lost In You- I love the guitar mix with Adams voice in this one, it sounds really good. The Chorus also is really good. 9.5/10
The Good Life- Kind of like the new Riot, a faster paced on the album that is about livin it up. Excellent Excellent. 10/10
No More- Kind of a slower song, but reminds me a little of lost in you but a different sound. Still a very solid song. 9/10
Last to Know- This song blew me away at how good a slow song can sound. This is the best when it comes to slow, but picks up also. 10/10
Someone Who Cares- Verses are solid, chorus is solid, and guitar sounds sick. 9/10
Bully- Kind of one of the ones I skip on the album, but not a bad song. I like the verses, they sound cool, but i believe the chorus has to grow on you to enjoy it. 7/10
Without You- Again, I love the instruments in this song, but its kind of contradictory. Adam tries to make it slow but the instruments say different, but overall not too bad. 7.5/10
Goin' Down- A weirder sounding song, a very interesting sound for three days grace, but they pulled it off. 8.5/10
Life Starts Now- I love this song. The intro guitar is amazing even though slow, and the sound and lyrics are amazing. 10/10

Recommended: Break, Lost in You, The Good Life, No More, Last to Know(Slower), Life Starts Now

Life Starts...Next Album?

Ok so...before you give me a no help on this hear me out. I LOVE Three Days Grace. One X was one of the best albums in 2006, and their first cd was beyond genius. When I heard Break, I was so excited for the album I couldn't handle it. But I hate to say, this album is an oober dissapointment.
The simplicity of the lyrics, and guitar riffs are what's getting me. From the opening song of Bitter Taste, to the dull chorus of Bully, I just..feel empty when I listen to this album. I really hate to write that I feel dissapointed with that, because I'm RARELY dissapointed by my favorite bands. The last band to dissapoint me was Dashboard Confessional in 2007 with Shade of Poision Trees. This is the same thing, most of these songs are..well..dull.
But with every dark is a light. There are some amazing songs on this album. First off, World So Cold is a heavy reminder of One X, mixed in with their first CD, and it's great, beyond great. Along with break, Someone Who Cares, and Last To Know. Amazing songs.
But when I listen to The Good Life, I feel like I should be moshing at a Fall Out Boy concert (not good). And Bully I feel like I knew the lyrics before they were written. And as I said about Bitter Taste, the lyrics are too simple. What made One X so amazing was it was unpredictable, it was complex, something unexpected, this was too ...expected. Maybe next album...
Hot Tracks: Break, World So Cold, Someone Who Cares, Last To Know
Tracks That Need Work: Bully, Bitter Taste, Lost In You, No More, The Good Life

Incredible Work.

This day in age, it seems as though most bands sell out when they become popular. I feared this for Three Days Grace when I heard "Break." After listening to this album, it's clear that they did the exact opposite. The lyrics and music are emotional and heart felt, and the musicianship is better than ever. Trust me, I'm not big on mainstream rock, but this is an incredible album.
