The Leprechaun (Original Version)

Released in 2000, Lil’ Flip’s breakout record created a blueprint of neck-snapping, Southern-fried Houston rap for his peers to study. The album’s cartoonish artwork turns out to be a wicked red herring: On tracks like the lean, mean, bass-heavy “My Block,” the sunny cruising anthem “Everyday,” and the grubby, drum-filled “I Can Do Dat,” a teenage Flip proves he isn’t playing around as he spits rhymes with so much melody that he makes everything sound like a hook.
