Tear the Fences Down

Tear the Fences Down

Eulogies’ Peter Walker is a true California pop songwriter and despite the band’s name and the fact that Tear the Fences Down was written, in part, in memory of Pablo Castelaz, the son of their record label’s co-founder who died in 2009 of a rare form of cancer, the album is still pumped with power, positivity and hooks galore. “Out of Style, Out of Touch” kicks things off with the nervous energy of Elvis Costello, circa 1977. “Better Than Nothing” cruises the Strip with the memory of Squeeze back in their early-‘80s heyday, with some strong backing harmonies making the tune even more irresistible. There’s still a tenderness here that guides “How to Say Goodbye,” “Separate Heart,” “Little Bombs” and “Little Else to Say” through the difficult emotions that come with tragedy. But Walker keeps his composure as the music illustrates that it can keep a memory alive. In most cases, a subject like this would mean not a dry eye in the house, but Walker piles the instrumentation on hard to ease the impact and keep the songs humming.
