John Daversa is the man!
His sense of style and improvisation is one reminiscent of Miles. His compositions are wonderfully crafted to say the least and his band plays those compositions with a driving attitude. This Live At Catalina's CD is one of my greatest iTunes investments. I would recommend this CD to anyone who has ever listened to R&B, Hip Hop, Blues, or Jazz as his compositions reflect his influence in all of these aspects. Amazing CD. Amazing Player.
A rad album from John Daversa!
John Daversa and his band throw down some awesome material on this album. His compositions are so unique and new, yet are also so noticeably influenced by a multitude of sources and stay true to his roots. All the improvisation on the album is masterful, and John Daversa's sense of musicality is so unbelievably hip that regardless of what kind of music you are into, you cannot help but dig it. If you purchase an album anytime soon, be sure to make it this one.
An Extremely Solid Live Big Band Album
There aren't many live big band albums out there and especially not ones recorded in Los Angeles. John isn't just a virtuostic trumpet and EVI player, he is also an amazing composer. His charts show plenty of influence from not only past jazz masters, but also contemporary sources such as hip hop and soul music. It almost feels like he is channeling the late Don Ellis. The band, comprised of LA regulars such as trumpeter Ron King, trombonist Alex Iles, and tenorman Tom Peterson, plays their butts off and provides one of the most solid live albums I've heard since the Vangaurd Jazz Orchestra. I'd reccomend this album to any jazz fan or anyone looking for something different and engaging. If you want to catch this awesome band, you can hear them at the Baked Potato in Hollywood on the last Sunday of every month.
