Dave Davies' opening collaboration with Anti-Flag on "Little Green Amp" features the chord progression from The Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night" and "Destroyer," but it's the follow-up tune with Ty Segall that's actually called "Livin' in the Past." Yet as with all things Davies—be it from Dave or brother Ray—things are more complex than they seem. I Will Be Me, Dave's second studio album since a major stroke in 2004, is sure to satisfy hardcore Kinks fans who've always loved his thoughtful way with a melody. After the heaviness of the first two tracks, "The Healing Boy" (with Yura Zeleznik and The Jigsaw Seen) creates a gentle, orchestrated flow, while "Midnight in L.A." (with Bruce Tyner and The Jigsaw Seen) settles into a modest jangle with hints of pedal steel guitar and a police siren. The British blues group Oli Brown Band throws a laid-back Memphis groove into "The Actress," as Dave fights for every note. Davies' voice isn't in the strongest form, but it's human and expressive and the sound of lifelong musician keeping in touch with the community he inspired.
