Sooner or Later

Sooner or Later

The Neo Boys stand out as both critically important and criminally unknown. From 1978 to 1983, these four young women bashed out quirky, clattering, unpolished music that charmed and seduced in a way similar to work by The Slits and The Raincoats. All-female bands were exceedingly rare at the time, and The Neo Boys were the first in Portland, Ore. Even with an early 1980 7” EP released by The Wipers’ Greg Sage, they seemed to fly under the radar of most punk fans, both then and now. This massive new collection was curated with the steadfast guidance of K Records’ Calvin Johnson. It features live sessions, demos, and studio recordings (including that long-out-of-print 1980 EP and the self-released 1982 “Crumbling Myths” EP). Here's hoping this puts The Neo Boys on the punk history map with a big star. From the raw, opening live track (“Kids”) to studio gems like “Give Me the Message,” The Neo Boys' youthful passion and playfulness, intertwined with a palpable disgust at gender roles and sexist tropes, pulses with a kind of excitement and energy that still thrills some 35 years on.
