Hold on to your fashionably crumpled fedora, homie. Juices is one wild ride — a bucking, kicking bronco ride of spitfire blues and ampheto-billy fuzz that sounds like the Black Keys fell into a vat of meth. Building their sound and their audience by busking on the streets of San Francisco, the duo of Francisco Fernandez (guitar/vocals) and Daniel Aguilar (drums) got together in 2006, released a couple of EPs in 2007, then settled down long enough to get this long-player out on the venerable Birdman label. The key ingredients to the Ferocious Few’s music are 1) speed, and 2) reverb, with the former element providing real wow factor: the amped up bashing Aguilar gives his kit on “Gasoline and Cocaine” and the hi-speed reverb blur that is Fernandez’ guitar work on “Porcelain Doll” are enough to make your heart pump faster, even if you’re not directly involved in the assault. Asked in an interview about crazy on-the-street moments, Fernandez once cited “A shirtless skinhead waving a sword at tourists, while forming his own moshpit on the sidewalk in front of us.” That sounds like the perfect visual for this splendidly visceral — and, yes, ferocious — outfit. Fantastic.
