The fact that Medicine in 2013 features singer Beth Thompson, drummer Jim Goodall, and leader Brad Laner is all the good news that a fan of the seminal Los Angeles art-rock/shoegaze group needs to know. To the Happy Few is the original band’s attempt to get back to the mindset that drove it creatively just before its 1995 breakup. The sublime, hard-to-categorize experimental pop of "The End of the Line" shows the beautiful chaos that made albums such as Buried Life and Her Highness underrated, intricate mysteries in an alternative scene that had given way to accessible hard rock. Here, the layers of guitars and swooning bass tones turn "Butterfly's Out Tonight" into a densely packed, quizzical-noir cliffhanger worthy of David Lynch. A few moments slow down just enough to make out what might be going on—if one believes their ears on "All You Need to Know" and can decipher the sounds that run backward. With these reference points, "Find Me Always" could be a mainstream pop hit by comparison. It's a beautiful world Medicine has created.
