Glide

Glide

First emerging in the 1970s, Dobro player Jerry Douglas is one of the true masters of his instrument. He has appeared on countess country and bluegrass albums, and he’s also played with artists such as Ray Charles, Paul Simon, and Charlie Haden. In the 1980s, Douglas was one of several musicians who expanded the boundaries of bluegrass by incorporating elements of jazz, rock, and other genres. His 12th solo album, Glide, is a low-key delight. Two tracks spotlight vocalists: “Marriage Made in Hollywood” features Travis Tritt intoning the sad tale of a junkie’s demise, while “Long Hard Road (The Sharecropper’s Dream)” showcases Rodney Crowell singing of rural roots, hard work, and musical dreams. The rest are instrumentals. “Sway Sur La Rue Royale,” a tribute to New Orleans, bluesy Dobro sets the stage for martial drumming and Dixieland horns. The legendary banjo player Earl Scruggs appears on the traditional “Home Sweet Home,” while “Trouble on Alum,” a medley of two old Scottish tunes, finds Douglas playing all of the instruments. Glide closes with “Pushed Too Far,” a nice slice of progressive bluegrass.
