Shut Down, Volume 2 was The Beach Boys' fifth studio album and the first of three studio albums released in 1964 (they also released the live album Concert). While Shut Down is generally considered one of the band's less consistent albums, it does features several landmark tracks, including Brian Wilson's "Don't Worry Baby" and his stunning ballad "The Warmth of the Sun," along with the Chuck Berry–inspired "Fun, Fun, Fun." However, The Beatles had landed on U.S. shores by this point. Their intensity—and the groundbreaking Lennon-McCartney songwriting—would greatly affect Wilson going forward. Here, the jokey studio chatter of "'Cassius' Love vs. 'Sonny' Wilson" is a silly novelty, and instrumentals such as "Shut Down, Part II" and "Denny's Drums" move away from the band's vocal strengths. However, The Beach Boys' cover of Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers' "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" is right on target. The group would soon adapt to the changes in the pop marketplace, and Brian Wilson would exceed all expectations for a little surf band from Hawthorne, Calif.
