Looking Forward

Looking Forward

Surviving physical maladies and personal rivalries, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young reunited once more to release 1999’s Looking Forward. The title seems appropriate — a reoccurring theme here is the group’s attempt to find renewed relevance at the dawn of the 21st century. If they don’t quite recapture the magic of 1970’s Deja Vu (their first album together), CSN&Y do achieve their highest level of inter-personal chemistry in a long time. The quartet returns to the political commentary of their Woodstock-era heyday with Stephen Stills’ seething “Seen Enough” and David Crosby’s anthem-like “Stand and Be Counted.” Hope for the days ahead is offered in the Neil Young-composed title track and Crosby’s “Dream for Him.” CSN&Y’s signature vocal harmonies (especially on Graham Nash’s bittersweet “Heartland”) and surging Latin/Caribbean arrangements (Stills’ festive “Faith in Me”) are much in evidence. The best songs overall are contributed by Young, who ruminates on the passage of time in “Slowpoke” and offers a quirky tribute to a lady-love in “Queen of Them All.”
