Bouncing back from a painful divorce, Shane Dwight delivers a torrid, lyrically revealing set of blues-based tunes on A Hundred White Lies. Years of near-constant touring took a toll on the singer/guitarist’s personal life but also led to the ferocious and pain-racked songs in this collection. While thoroughly steeped in the blues, Dwight leavens his music with influences ranging from ’70-style hard rock to modern country. His guitar touch is impeccable, capable of fret-scorching solos (especially in “Black Ice”) and subtler acoustic playing (as in “Love That’s True”). Love’s treacherous ways are a recurring theme here, with devilish women turning up in many of the album’s tunes. Sometimes these femme fatales offer a good time, as in the high-stepping “She Struts 22”; in other tunes, like the smoldering ballad “Broken,” they leave only sorrow behind. Dwight is immensely helped by his razor-sharp support band (recruited from Delbert McClinton’s touring combo), as well as by the backup vocals of Bekka Bramlett and The McCrary Sisters.
