Replica, Vol. 2

Replica, Vol. 2

In 2010, R. Stevie Moore’s right-hand man Irwin Chusid sifted through volumes of Moore’s home recordings where he eventually picked just over 50 previously unreleased tracks for release on the three-volume Replica series (with more volumes in the works). With Vol. 2, the equally erratic and catchy “I Told You” proves to be the only recording from the '70s (the rest span 1986 – 2010). Followers of indie notables are sure to delight in cameos from Ariel Pink, Mike Watt, Yukio Yung and many others. Molly Andrews deviates from her Appalachian folk crooning to bestow “Everyone, But Everyone” with a flirty vocal performance that could be mistook for Mary Timony. Co-written with the late Victor Lovera, “It Sparkes” makes good on its title with a shimmering standout tune that plays like Emitt Rhodes fronting Guided By Voices. Moore’s four-track savant style is exemplified well on the seemingly Syd Barrett-inspired “Play Myself Some Music (Home Version)” where you get a glimpse of how he records as he composes before building the song up with accompanying overdubs.
