Unlike most legendary rock ’n’ rollers, Ian McLagan still plays with a hunger and consistency that’s made him an in-demand keyboardist among recording artists looking for a genuine touch. His solo career also offers a powerful consistency that’s best emphasized by his longtime friends, The Bump Band. Though they’re hardly household names, guitarist Scrappy Jud Newcomb, bassist Jon Notarthomas, and drummer Conrad Choucroun can play a blues shuffle like their lives depend on it. On United States, they settle into what they do best. “All I Wanna Do” cruises as one would expect The Faces might do in their senior years, while McLagan uses his limited but effective voice to take on the truths of “Mean Old World” and deal with romantic failure on “Don’t Say Nothing.” Generally, the group stick to wary love songs that sound as natural with their bluesy pub rock as Ian McLagan does sitting at the keyboard. This shows that once the music is in you, it’d be a waste not to let it out at every chance.
