“Love thine enemy,” alt-country auteur Cass McCombs humbly sings at the opening of his sixth LP, Humor Risk, before undercutting that sentiment with a caveat: “But hate their lack of sincerity.” McCombs’ sense of humor has always been dry, and on this album he delivers one of his most upbeat collections without sacrificing his self-contradicting wit. Look no further than “The Same Thing,” its mysterious sayings (“Pain and love are the same thing”) disguised beneath a sunny folk-rock strum.
