Rated O

Rated O

2009’s Rated O is the second installment of the Thank Your Parents trilogy that began with Preteen Weaponry in 2008. This is where the Brooklyn ensemble (expanded to a five-piece for this release) indulges their weirdest and most expansive sound collages for a set two hours in length with four tracks clocking in over ten minutes. Oneida have always favored the drone over the hook and here the gestalt folds into every possible genre from Krautrock to shoegaze to metal, never settling for empty feedback but layering and combining influences until everything comes out like one long dark night of the soul. “10:30 At the Oasis” works off an abrasive electronic edge that’s further explored with “Story of O.”  “The River” channels both Spaceman 3 and a world of psychedelic doom metal that’s driven deeper into the powerchord slide of “I Will Haunt You.” This expanded forum — 3CDs in hard format — allows the band to patiently explore its every whim. But this is not a place for individual virtuosity — there are no self-indulgent solos — but a space for collective energy to reverberate amongst the studio walls.
