Live at Ancienne Belgique

Live at Ancienne Belgique

Recorded in Brussels, Live at Ancienne Belgique was tracked when Yeasayer toured for 2010’s Odd Blood. It opens with palpable excitement from an audience roaring in delight to the opening notes of “Madder Red.” The Eastern-infused electro-indie single was originally inspired by John Lennon’s “Jealous Guy,” but here it’s played as a song that's come into its own via countless live performances. The contrast between the song’s uplifting melodies and its achingly sung lyrics about a losing gambler is even more pronounced here. The centerpiece of Odd Blood is "O.N.E.," which proves to be an even better example of Yeasayer letting its songs take on new lives in a concert setting. It's the album’s most danceable tune; the band lets it jam out for nearly three minutes longer than the studio version, turning up those Moogy drones and inviting the enthusiastic crowd to clap along to its dance beats. Conversely, the mystical, mantra-laden “Red Cave” (from Yeasayer's 2007 debut, All Hour Cymbals) is shortened here—barely enough to notice. But it’s played with enough space to make it seem vastly expanded.
