Bria

On her fourth album, this Canadian vocalist and trumpeter projects vintage and contemporary moods at the same time. Her version of Benny Goodman’s “Don’t Be That Way” lets some old-school clarinet lines skulk around in the verses, but when she takes up her own horn, she embraces post-bop harmony. Taking more risks, she adds unusual tempo changes to her version of Cole Porter’s “From This Moment On,” which pay off just as nicely. Like Diana Krall, Skonberg switches easily between pop accents and virtuosic playing.
