I *cannot* get over this album!
This album blows me away. One listen turns into 20 listens. AllI wanna do is repeat. I bought this album a week ago (heard about them on NPR) and Mashrou' Leila has been my soundtrack since.
This band is very original, not copying any type of sound but, that said, there are times in various songs when they remind me of U2, or M.I.A., or Queens of the Stoneage. Yeah, you read that right. Mashrou' Leila can pull off a lot of sounds, and come out sounding world class at the same time.
Love this cd, can't stop listening, can't stop dancing, can't stop singing along (and I speak no Arabic).

Amazing Debut Album by an Ultra Hip Lebanese Band

Mashrou' Leila is a Lebanese band that is made up of young musicians who have come together to produce a new kind of alternative, underground Arabic music that mixes different genres, Eastern and Western, in a way that goes against the traditional poppy songs that usually define contemporary Arabic music. The songs on this album broach such taboo subjects as homoerotic desire, inter-religious love affairs, and political corruption while attempting to pre-defined gender roles and other social 'norms' in the Arab world.
*Amazing* Album!!!
I love how creative they are with the vocals and instrumentals. Very modern with relavent and meaningful lyrics but still inclusive of traditional sounds. Miles above the commercial Arabic pop out there. I wish them the best of luck in all their musical endeavors and hope that they come to the San Francisco Bay Area sometime in the future!
