The Big Huge is a U.S.-only release that served as the second LP of Wee Tam elsewhere around the world. For that reason, it is extremely similar to Wee Tam. The band was still the classic quartet of Robin Williamson, Mike Heron, Christina “Liquorice” McKechnie and Rose Simpson and the approach was still relatively straightforward. “Maya” is a Williamson epic that swerves all over the place with an adventurous majesty. Heron’s “Greatest Friend” is a sweet counterpunch, a bucolic piece that is more modest in range. Williamson’s “Lordly Nightshade” and Heron’s “Cousin Caterpillar” exhibit shades of acoustic Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd with a trippy extroverted demeanor that securely places the tracks in the late ‘60s. The final three tracks, “The Iron Stone,” ‘Douglas Traherne Harding” and The Circle Is Unbroken” reflect the band’s traditional interest in minstrel-based folk music with beautiful accents of flute and other acoustic instruments making for the perfect musical bedding.
