Fairechild

Fairechild

Before Drag City recording artist Elisa Randazzo went solo, she was half of the duo Fairechild. The daughter of classic hitmakers Teddy Randazzo and Victoria Pike (who penned such staples as “Goin’ out of My Head” and “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle") was then married to Josh Schwartz, who quit Beachwood Sparks to pursue this project. Fairechild’s surface similarities to Fleetwood Mac garnered it the nickname “Fleetwood Sparks,” but from the opening track here, “Hit and Run,” it's apparent there was much more going on than retro record-collection mimicry. Having played with Red Krayola, Spiritualized, and The Charlatans' Tim Burgess, Randazzo brought a forward-thinking edge to her songwriting, trimmed in familiar old tones. Similarly, Schwartz’s “Let Somebody In” echoes Carnival of Light–era Ride, while his impressive guitar work seems born from old Neil Young vinyl and the sonic thunder of Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis. When Randazzo and Schwartz wrote together, there was a Nicks/Buckingham-esque chemistry and tension; see “The Way,” which floats on analog keyboard chirps and an incredibly uplifting chorus with beautiful male/female vocal harmonies.
