Cure for Pain

Cure for Pain

In the midst of the overdriven guitars that ruled college rock in the early ‘90s, Morphine emerged with a smoldering, intoxicating sound that ditched the six-strings for the tones of Mark Sandman’s two-string bass and Dana Colley’s moody saxophone riffs. The trio’s landmark 1993 album, Cure for Pain, ventures into sinewy blues numbers like “Buena” that showcase Sandman’s murky vocals, as well as slinking noir-jazz groovers like “Sheila,” sounding like little else from that era with its heavy, seedy atmosphere.
