Monastic Living

Monastic Living

“I don’t want to be called a poet,” barks Parquet Courts' Andrew Savage on Monastic Living opener, “No, No, No!” Hailed from the start for their vertiginous, language-driven post-punk, the New York outfit follows 2015’s Sunbathing Animal with this brief but uncompromising concept EP—a meditative, mostly instrumental set of rugged noise-rock that finds them taking an unexpected vow of silence. Filled with chunky rhythmic experiments (the expansive title cuts) and psychedelic textures (“Frog Pond Plop” and “Poverty and Obedience”) the end result is casually transcendent.
