Dark Days/Light Years

Dark Days/Light Years finds Super Furry Animals plowing through a diverse amalgam of musical genres all the while retaining the ADD-fueled, mind-melting fun that is unmistakably their sound. “Crazy Naked Girls” opens with soulful Funkadelic inspired grooves pumping around doubled wah-wah guitar leads as Gruff Rhys sings nonsensically sexy lyrics with distorted Beck-esque falsettos. The song is a tangle of textures and psychedelic soundscapes with ensnarled threads of melody under styles that birth something you can both dance to and trip-out on. SFA downshifts on “MT.”, a catchy ditty rooted in equal parts folk pop and noise rock, before detouring into a full-on Brit pop club-hit with “Inaugural Terms,” an undeniably infectious tune that borrows from mid-‘90s UK indie pop. (The tune boasts a German spoken word cameo by Franz Ferdinand's Nick McCarthy.) With Dark Days/Light Years the Welsh quintet continue to excel at making unpredictably catchy music that’s heavy on the kinds of weird noises you’d expect them to find dumpster diving behind the Flaming Lips’ recording studio.
