The Indictment

The Indictment

The Indictment is the first chapter of a rap trilogy that also includes The Verdict and The Sentence (plus a DVD). It finds the legendary Bay Area crime-rap practitioner (also of the group Mob Figaz) continuing his tradition of cinematic, ultra-grimy storytelling set to dark and cerebral beats. Fourteen tracks deep (including four skits pulled from true-crime news broadcasts), the subject matter is often one-dimensional, but The Jacka's smooth-yet-ruffled flow keeps listeners compelled throughout, as do quality guest verses from incarcerated homicide-rap O.G. X-Raided ("Murder on My Mind"), Philly representative Freeway ("Both Coast" with Erk Tha Jerk), and likeminded Bay homie J-Stalin on "All We Do (Remix)." Other standouts include "Where Do We Go from Here" with I-Rocc and "All We Do" featuring Laroo. While hip-hop has no shortage of criminally minded emcees, The Jacka remains one of the best at his craft, and this album is a appropriately strong addition to his already-impressive discography.
