“We’ve got to put the sun back in our hearts,” croons James Skelly over country-tinged guitars on “Put the Sun Back”, the third track of The Coral’s fifth album. It’s a statement directed at an unnamed love interest but it could double as a mission statement for Roots & Echoes, a record that sees the Merseyside band put a possible break-up behind them to re-emerge with renewed vigour and—as evidenced by the shimmering doo-wop of songs like “Who’s Gonna Find Me” and “Jacqueline”—a sizeable serving of soul.
