Hickory Wind : Live at the Gram Parsons Guitar Pull, Waycross GA

Charlie Louvin, one of the giants of country music, has moved audiences with his soulful singing and songwriting for decades. From the ‘40s to the ‘60s, Louvin and his late brother Ira, who sang and played mandolin, performed as the Louvin Brothers. Ira died in an auto accident in 1965, but Charlie has continued to perform as a solo artist. Hickory Wind was recorded live at the 12th-annual Gram Parsons Guitar Pull and Tribute Festival in Waycross, Georgia, Parson’s hometown. Charlie was 82 at the time of this 2009 recording and his voice is a weathered instrument, but he still brings great feeling to the music. Backed by a five-piece band, Louvin presents a 14-song set that includes such classics as “I Don’t Love You Anymore,” “Think I’ll Go Somewhere and Cry Myself to Sleep,” and “The Christian Life,” which the Byrds covered when Parsons was a member of that band. There’s also a hard-chuggin’ version of Merle Haggard’s “Workin’ Man Blues,” which features nicely contrasting guitar solos. And it’s good to hear Louvin honor Parsons with a touching cover of the Parsons-penned title track.
