Paradise

Paradise

Singer/songwriter Diego Garcia made a name for himself as leader of Elefant, a new-millennium postpunk band that took its cues from The Smiths and other '80s-era British bands. Garcia the solo artist still has an interest in Anglo rock (Aztec Camera and early Bowie come to mind), but his second album also finds him embracing his Argentine-American roots more strongly. This comes out most overtly on the Spanish-language shout-along chorus of “Donde Estas,” but there are also dramatic acoustic guitar leads and driving rhythms—as well as melodic elements that reference various traditional Latin folk styles. Garcia’s soft baritone is as seductive as ever here, playing the sexy crooner on “Truth Will Ring” and “My Heart Is an Island.” He sounds more contemporary on the catchy “Start with the End,” the dreamy “Tell Me,” and the flamenco-driven “My Everything.” Finding a way to reconcile his roots with his modern-day interests, Diego Garcia has successfully created an inspired middle ground on Paradise.
