Country Man

Country Man

After winning Canada’s Juno Award for Reggae Recording of the Year four times in a row (including the jazzy swing of 2014's “Welcome the King”), Jamaican-born Exco Levi finally goes long. Country Man is an expressive, optimistic debut album. Its sound has less in common with the vibrancy of contemporary dancehall than with the rustic, rootsy feel of Gyptian and '70s counterparts like Dennis Brown: reggae music as a Jamaican variant of American soul. “That one-room shack, sitting on the mountain,” Levi sings on "One Room Shack," the album's barest, most tender moment. "That's where I-man reside.”
