The Ultimate Collection: David Ruffin

The Ultimate Collection: David Ruffin

Centering on David Ruffin’s post-Temptations Motown output (1969 to 1977), this wonderfully considered collection would be all the solo Ruffin you’d need if the soul shouter himself didn’t convey such yearning, joy, and sadness. But it’s an excellent starting point. One need only listen to the pleader “Common Man” or the inescapably melancholic “(My Whole World Ended) The Moment You Left Me” to understand Ruffin’s gifts, which also include the ability to lift even pedestrian dancefloor soul to something magical (“Who Am I”) and singing a simple R&B-pop tune like it was the last song ever written (“On and On”).
