Ital Corner

Ital Corner

Though not as playful as U-Roy or as charismatic as the dapper Dennis Alcapone, Prince Jazzbo managed to cut some of the most important deejay records of the early ‘70s thanks to his inimitable delivery and his association with many of Jamaica’s most popular producers, including Coxsone Dodd, Bunny “Striker” Lee, and the legendary Lee “Scratch” Perry. It was at Perry’s Black Ark studio that Jazzbo recorded the material that would become Ital Corner in a single half-hour session. Jazzbo is in unusually inspired form here. His lyrics are full of intimations of the political violence that plagued Kingston in the lead-up to 1976's general election. On “Dreadlocks Corner,” Jazzbo delivers fiercely militant lyrics over a menacing groove, while “Natty Passing Through Rome” paints a grim portrait of the torments faced by faithful Rastafarians in a fallen world. Though Ital Corner isn't nearly as well known as other Lee Perry–produced full-lengths from this period, it's nonetheless a remarkable album and perhaps the high point of Prince Jazzbo’s deejay career.
