iTunes Review

Avenged Sevenfold’s fifth studio album is their first without drummer James “The Reverend” Sullivan, who died in 2009. Dream Theatre’s Mike Portnoy makes for a stellar replacement both musically and sentimentally as Sullivan was largely inspired by the talented Sullivan. Though some fans believe Nightmare to be conceptual, it plays more like a tribute album as the lyrics often touch on the subject of the band’s fallen brother — they also recorded a few of Sullivan’s songs for this project. The title-track opens with M. Shadows belting out fevered vocals like a young James Hetfield by way of the late Layne Staley from Alice In Chains. Synyster Gates’ dexterous guitar leads import the fretboard-shredding harmonic style that was forged in the fires of early-‘80s British metal, especially during the soaring melodies in the chorus of “Welcome to the Family” and all over the powerful “Danger Line.” The wistful “Buried Alive” proves that ballads can still sound tough. The bookending 11-minute epic “Save Me” goes out like a 21-gun salute to Sullivan.

FIGHT ON A7X

Has some bad moments but it still great.

Avenged Sevenfold's new album delivers at some times and fails to impress at others. Some songs are classic A7X and I definitely recommend them. Some, however, are slow and honestly kinda boring. Those I don't recommend so much. I'll just explain each in detail.
Nightmare - 10/10 - The title track was previously released to the public. You probably already own it. If you don't, buy it. Now. Enough said.
Welcome to the Family - 9/10 - Cool song with a phenomenal chorus. The verses seem rather lacking but the epic solo and best chorus on the album make up for it.
Danger Line - 8/10 - Good song with good lyrics. Nothing particularly special but I really like it and I think any A7X fan will. The outro is slow but still enjoyable so no real downsides to this song.
Buried Alive - 8/10 - Starts slow but halfway through an epic solo comes seemingly out of nowhere in a style similar to "One" by Metallica in that it is then followed by a significantly heavier section. It's good and another song worth buying.
Natural Born Killer - 9/10 - Very engaging intro and verse. The buildup to the chorus is ok and the chorus itself is good. The verse feels a lot like "Almost Easy." This certainly won't disappoint.
So Far Away - 6/10 - Kinda country-like and boring for A7X. The lyrics are sad. I suppose I recommend it if you liked "Dear God." Otherwise pass this one up.
God Hates Us - 10/10 - Finest song on the album. It has a slow, long intro but picks up after that in a fantastic way. Who knew Shadows could still scream? I sure didn't so this is a pleasant surprise. This is a fun and catchy song and if you buy anything from this album it should be this song.
Victim - 5/10 - Very slow paced and very long. It picks up 2/3 of the way through but it just isn't good enough. It's the second longest song on the album and it definitely overstays its welcome.
Tonight the World Dies - 6/10 - Another slow and overall boring song. Sure the lyrics are sad but that really isn't enough for me. I don't know about anyone else so maybe you'll like this.
Fiction - 7/10 - It's about Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan. It's depressing and kinda repetitive. I don't know if I should recommend it or not. It's a flip of a coin here I guess.
Save Me - 8/10 - I guess it's like "A Little Piece of Heaven" just not nearly as fantastic. It doesn't really sound like A7X's style. If you can sit through all 10 minutes of it I think you'll enjoy it. Not for the impatient.
Lost it All - 8.5/10 - Very Upbeat. I think this should've been included in the regular album. I say buy it.

Wow! I

First review!

It seems like the death of the "Rev" (R.I.P) inspired the guys to return to their old ways (Screaming)... I gotta say the CD was really well done... The "REV" honestly contributed greatly to this master piece and he should be smiling up above right now!... Good jobs guys, can't wait to see you guys in September. Later! 10/10

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Huntington Beach, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

The members of metalcore outfit Avenged Sevenfold (or A7X) were still attending high school in Huntington Beach, CA, when they formed their band in 1999. Nevertheless, it didn't take long for M. Shadows (vocals), Zacky Vengeance (guitar), Synyster Gates (guitar), the Reverend (drums), and Johnny Christ (bass) to make an impression with their aggressive hybrid of metal and punk-pop. The band made its official debut in July 2001, releasing Sounding the Seventh Trumpet on the Good Life label before...
