Nightmares...and Other Tales from the Vinyl Jungle

The easy-rolling "Must of Got Lost" [sic]—The J. Geils Band's biggest hit of the '70s—is this 1974 album's calling card. Like that tune, most of the record finds the group playing to their strengths as a gritty, greasy, R&B-based outfit, whether on the frenetic, hard-grooving workout "Detroit Breakdown" or the cover of Bull & The Matadors' good-time '60s hit "Funky Judge." But touches like the strange, exotica-tinged interlude "Nightmares," the funk-flamenco feel of "I'll Be Coming Home," and the elaborate opening of "Gettin' Out" hint at the subtle-but-significant changes the band had gone through since their raw, blues-based beginnings.
