Locked 'n' Loaded

Locked 'n' Loaded

This album's original subtitle, “Greatest Hits Live,” neatly sums up its parts. By 1990, vocalist Leonard Graves Phillips and guitarist Stan Lee had been a critical force in the SoCal punk scene for more than a decade, and the band’s manic energy and Phillips’ astounding, rapid-fire lyrical delivery was the stuff of legends. Their live show was a veritable circus, with crazy costumes, sock puppets and all manner of theatrical flourishes pushing performances to the edge. Locked ‘N’ Loaded captures them at the peak of their career, and the sound quality is excellent. Standouts include songs from their hard-to-find first records, like their frenzied treatment of The Banana Splits TV show theme, covers of classic rock staples “Eve of Destruction,” “Nights In White Satin,” and “Paranoid,” and Dickies originals that have stood the test of time like “Give It Back,” “I’m Stuck in a Pagoda (With Tricia Toyota),” “Manny, Moe & Jack,” and “You Drive Me Ape (You Big Gorilla).” Two nods to B-movie horror, “Killer Klowns From Outer Space” and the insanely catchy “Gigantor,” remind us precisely why we thought they were just so darn fun.
