Nils Lofgren

Nils Lofgren

Nils Lofgren has the kind of voice that conveys sweetness, sadness, and gritty rock joy in equal measure, and the songs on his 1975 debut solo album succeed the same way. Nostalgia-flecked pop tunes (“Back It Up,” “The Sun Hasn’t Set on This Boy Yet”) rub against little anthems to hard knocks (“Can’t Buy a Break,” “Rock and Roll Crook”), while others show the guitarist/songwriter’s pin-pricked rock ’n’ roll heart (“Two by Two,” and the Keith Richards nod “Keith Don’t Go [Ode to the Glimmer Twins]”). Rolling Stone accurately called this LP a “tour de force of unquenchable vitality.”
