The Sardinian-born musician Augusto Pirodda is little known in the United States, but No Comment is his fifth solo release. This intriguing and often spare pianist, who has roots in Italian pop, values silence as much as sound. At times he can evoke Thelonious Monk because of his unusual, personal approach to the keyboard. Paul Motian and Gary Peacock, who have played in trios with Bill Evans, Paul Bley, and Keith Jarrett, are Pirodda’s partners here. They’re a great match; their time-bending, lyrical ways are attuned to Pirodda’s sensibility. The opening cut, a group improvisation called “It Begins Like This,” is the sound of musicians simultaneously feeling each other out and being completely comfortable together. “Seak Fruit” is colored by Motian’s sensitive brushwork, and Peacock isn’t afraid to play a single note or a short phrase and then hang back for a while. “Brrribop!!!” displays the band’s edgier side. Pirodda’s thorny playing is backed by a web of bass and drums that is both abstract and hard-swinging. “Ola,” which features a compelling riff and its variations, closes the album strongly.
