The Fallen By Watchbird

The Fallen by Watch Bird is a heady album that Jane Weaver describes as “A new conceptual pop project featuring seven chapters of cosmic aquatic folklore influenced by Eastern European children's cinema and Germanic kuntsmärchen.” As complex as that sounds, these compositions play with simpler beauty, starting with “Europium Alluminate,” a psychedelic folk tune built on hypnotic drones, delicately plucked strings, and spoken-word bits by Susan Christie. Other guest appearances include Wendy Flower from the late-'60s singing sister duo Wendy & Bonnie and Welsh singer/songwriter Lisa Jen. The title track gradually ignites with the pulsing tones and analog chirps of a bygone Hawkwind epic. Weaver’s vocals seep in and drive a lyrical narrative that involves a pet raven, witch’s magic milk, and a loved one sent off to war. Fans of Linda Perhacs’ space folk are sure to fall for “Turning in Circles.” By the time the gossamer “My Soul Was Lost” plays, it’s evident that Weaver hardly needs cameo accompaniments.
